Share Article

Welcome 2025, the world of SEO is set for some significant shifts– some that have already picked up traction in 2024. From AI integration to the rising importance of Reddit SEO, there are a substantial amount of changes that will shape search, AI, and SEO as we know it.

So what trends will be important for you and your SEO strategy? What are the anticipated SEO/search challenges and opportunities for 2025? As a marketing agency, we’re asking the same questions as other industry professionals.

In this blog, we will look at SEO trends and predictions for 2025 based on industry research, our evolving SEO experience, and insights our team gathered from attending the 2024 BrightonSEO conference.

BrightonSEO Conference Summary

Three members of the SocialSurge team were incredibly grateful to be able to attend (for the first time) the 2024 BrightonSEO Conference in San Diego. Eric Hess- Co-Owner, Tommy Ciampa- Senior SEO Specialist, and Chandler Sullivan- Senior Content Specialist (the person writing this blog), attended the two-day conference that featured three different talk tracks with four-time clusters for presentations (three speakers each) and a keynote speaker on both days. Did you catch all of that math? That equals 26 different speakers (and then some)!

The three of us split up amongst the three different talk tracks throughout the day and reconvened later to discuss our main takeaways.

Obviously, given the name of the conference, the topics discussed were extremely relevant to SEO trends and the continually evolving SEO landscape.

So, without further ado, with extensive SEO trend research and our findings from the BrightonSEO conference, let’s discuss crucial SEO trends and predictions for 2025!

SEO Trends for 2025

In 2025, a mix of AI advancements, shifting user behavior (particularly in the search journey), and regulatory developments promises to reshape how we approach search engine optimization. The research shows that the biggest overarching trends will be balancing innovation with authenticity and automation with human insight. Here is a breakdown of the most important SEO trends for the upcoming year:

Search Alternatives and the Ripple Effect of Google’s Antitrust Trial

Google’s dominance in the search engine market may no longer seem to be! The tech giant is being challenged by antitrust rulings that may require Google to share its data. This could allow competitors to build robust search engines using Google’s data and algorithms, diversifying the search landscape dramatically.

Also, let’s not forget how Google had a massive document leak that revealed how the search giant is using (or has used) clicks, links, content, Chrome data, and more for ranking.

What This Means for SEO

Changes in Ad Pricing

One potential impact is a change in ad pricing, which could result in more competitive rates. However, there may also be short-term disruptions in the advertising industry as the market adjusts.

Increased Competition

The ruling could increase competition, creating opportunities for other search engines to gain market share.

Greater Transparency

Since Google’s antitrust trial is ongoing, new trial exhibits have been released by the U.S. Department of Justice, which include internal Google presentations, documents, and emails relating to ranking.

Diversified Strategies

SEO teams might need to develop strategies customized to multiple platforms, not just Google (if you haven’t been doing so already). Instead of one roadmap, there may be a handful or more to prepare for yourselves or your clients.

Diversified Ad Platforms

Businesses may need to diversify their ad efforts by exploring alternative platforms like Meta Ads or TikTok.

Focus on Organic SEO

As always, focus on creating high-quality, relevant content while optimizing web/mobile formats and building authority with backlinks.

Search is Changing As We Know It

Almost 60% of Google searches in the US resulted in no clicks in 2024, with users either abandoning their search altogether (around 37%) or reformulating their query (approximately 22%). So, what does this mean? Search is changing, fast.

Although most referral traffic still originates from search engines, traditional search and AI-based searches aren’t delivering the same impact anymore. There’s a disconnect between traffic sources and what consumers actually engage with online. The user’s search journey has become more complicated, leading to a new way SERPs appear.

Google is making active changes to the appearance of SERPs, such as increasing the number of featured snippets and including AI Overview results (we have an example picture below). These changes aim to keep users on the platform by providing them with information crawled from the web, making users more prone to “zero-click” searches.

Let’s Take a Moment for Reddit

Sistrix, an SEO monitoring tool, reports that Reddit’s SEO visibility on Google has increased by 1,328%. Once ranked 85th, Reddit has surged to become the 3rd most visible domain in Google Search, US (SISTRIX VI, 16th October 2024); This places Reddit above YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. This remarkable growth is also reflected in its organic traffic, with visits from Google U.S. searches skyrocketing from 57 million in July 2023 to an impressive 427 million in April 2024.

For marketers and content strategists, this is an untapped goldmine. Reddit’s potential lies not just in its SEO performance but in its unique community-driven content, which resonates with niche audiences. Crafting a Reddit SEO strategy—optimizing for discoverability within the platform and leveraging its influence on Google search—could be a game-changer in 2025.

You Need to Implement AI Ethically

The buzzword of 2024… AI! Jokes aside, Artificial Intelligence is no longer just a buzzword – it’s becoming an integral part of SEO strategies. It is an understatement to say that AI has revolutionized SEO because it is practically changing our world every single day, across diverse sectors. From making tasks like content generation and data analysis to chatbots and AI search, there is no stopping the AI revolution.

The fact of the matter is, you should be using AI to help. But you should also be providing clear expectations of AI use, have an AI ethics policy, provide AI training, teach about bias, be transparent with your clients about AI use, and stay informed on the many AI legislations that are out there.

Humans are Biased. Generative AI is even worse.

70% of marketers using AI haven’t been trained by their company on how to properly use the technology. This means AI without human refinement is going to be a nightmare of oversaturated or false information, particularly for perpetuating human biases. AI learned from human biases, which has now created a problematic feedback loop that is feeding others biased information.

On top of that, AI is headed for one of the biggest copyright and plagiarism battles ever. AI-generated content (text, images, logos) cannot be copyrighted, meaning such outputs often fall into the public domain, which is bad for marketers and artists as they face significant challenges as AI models frequently train on their publicly available works, often without consent.

User Intent vs. Keywords (Content UX)

The days of stuffing pages with high-volume keywords have been dead, so please start to think about user intent! Modern searchers use long-tail phrases and ask complete questions, making it essential to align your content with user intent, and not the other way around. You can’t “create a problem” for your users; your users are already showing up with their pain points that they need help with. Delivering content with a strong user experience (UX) will become vital.

Keep Pushing Video Content

Video content is no longer optional– it’s a key piece of SEO strategy. This is no surprise with TikTok and YouTube being the top video platforms that continue to grow in the search realm (as previously stated in this blog).

Say Goodbye to TikTok?

At the time I am writing this, we are currently waiting to see if TikTok gets banned in the United States. If the ban goes into effect in early 2025, this will be a huge pivot for organizations and businesses that use TikTok as a primary platform for influencing, social media, search, and e-commerce. Stay tuned…

SEO Predictions for 2025

Adapting to Zero-Click Searches

With the rise of zero-click searches (when a user performs a search but does not click on any results) and AI-generated answers, traditional traffic acquisition is getting harder. Organic click-through rates (CTR) may decline further as users get what they need without leaving the SERP.

Originality, Originality, Originality!

Are you tired of hearing the ‘Human originality vs. AI battle’? Well, this is going to remain crucial for years to come. As I mentioned in the beginning, we find that the biggest overarching trends will be based on balancing innovation with authenticity and automation with human insight.

In 2025, we expect Google to double down on rewarding originality through metrics like the “Original Content Score”. This means repurposed or generic content will drop in rankings to unique research, customer intent, expert insights, and fresh perspectives. Additionally, the rise of “AI originality tracking” tools will spike, and clients may be more hands-on about asking for these types of AI reports (especially if your company doesn’t have an established AI policy).

Don’t Neglect Technical SEO

With search evolving, technical SEO will become the backbone of success. Factors like site speed, mobile optimization, and accessibility are non-negotiable for top rankings.

Local SEO Will Stay Vital

Local SEO will continue to solidify its importance, with a particular focus on human-generated content. For businesses targeting local audiences, an updated and fully optimized Google Business Profile (GBP) and Bing Places for Business Page is essential. Previously, many GBP listings were suspended due to a high volume of AI automation, especially in business descriptions and posts. This may be an indicator of Google prioritizing human effort over AI in local search. Additionally, customer reviews with the right sentiment will heavily influence local rankings.

Micro-Localization in Local SEO

Here is a local SEO prediction: local search may evolve to deliver hyper-precise results for smaller location areas, such as neighborhoods or specific blocks. Queries like “best tacos near [intersection]” might become increasingly common.

SEO Strategy Tips for 2025

Strategies to Increase Visibility

Build Strong Brand Authority

Create and establish comprehensive, authoritative resources and content on topics that develop thought leadership in your industry.

Be AI-Friendly

Optimize and create content that Large Language Models (LLMs) would consider “top recommendations”.

Enhance Credibility Through External Validation

Score some endorsements from others in your field to build up your rep and gain trust. Connect with industry leaders and share your knowledge – it’s a great way to get noticed and boost your credibility with your audience.

Explore New Channels

This will be thee trend to explore in 2025 if you want to stay ahead of changing search and SERPs. Additionally, platforms like TikTok and YouTube are becoming popular search alternatives, so invest in engaging video content to capture audience attention.

Strategies to Align with AI Ethics

Double-Down on E-E-A-T

Search engines will place a greater emphasis on E-E-A-T, with an added focus on verifying content and its sources. As AI-generated content floods the internet, human-verified and well-sourced material will rank higher.

Strike the Balance of AI and Originality

Businesses must balance leveraging AI tools for efficiency with maintaining originality in their content strategies. Over-reliance on AI risks producing generic content that fails to resonate with audiences or meet search engine standards for quality.

Monitor Legal Developments in AI Regulations

As AI regulations evolve, businesses must stay informed about emerging guidelines for ethical AI use in content creation and marketing. Keeping up with legal updates and consulting experts will help organizations ensure compliance and reduce risks.

Strategies to Address AI Bias & Misinformation

Develop an AI Ethics Policy

Set clear guidelines on the ethical use of AI within your organization.

Implement Bias Training

Regularly train teams to recognize and address bias in AI-generated outputs.

Vet Generative AI Tools

Carefully evaluate tools for patterns of biased responses.

Submit Feedback to AI Platforms

Report biased or problematic outputs to the platform providers.

Double Check Info & Sources

AI isn’t perfect. AI platforms are constantly evolving to have better research capabilities, but don’t solely rely on these platforms to be 100% accurate all the time. Make sure you double-check your AI-generated research and information to ensure its accuracy.

How to Succeed in Content UX

Solve Problems

Build content around your audience’s pain points and challenges rather than chasing keywords.

Prioritize Context (and Quality) Over Volume

Avoid terms with unclear intent or high competition from UGC platforms like Reddit.

Don’t Just Make Content

Focus on content that truly fits with your audience’s intent… don’t just make content, to make content. A good way to do this is to identify “content gaps” within your content that are common SERPs for your audience.

How to Optimize Technical SEO

Core Web Vitals

Optimize page speed and mobile usability to meet Google’s ranking standards.

Structured Data

It may be in your best interest to implement schema markup to help search engines understand your content better.

JavaScript Optimization

Resolve rendering issues to ensure your content is indexed properly.

Best Practices for Video Content

Optimize for Google Video Indexing

Use structured data and host videos on indexed watch pages.

Expand Text Content Visually

Complement content and blogs with video summaries to cater to different audience preferences.

Create or AI-Generate Captions

To expand your UX, consider creating your own captions or utilizing AI-generating caption tools to enhance the accessibility of your videos.

As short-form videos are winning the internet, the websites that integrate them into their content will rise in Google ranking.

How to Improve Your Local SEO

GBP and Bing Business Page

Regularly update your Google Business Profile and Bing Business for Places page with new photos, updated content, Q&A, and posts.

Get Detailed Reviews

Encourage clients to leave detailed, positive reviews, and also respond to reviews promptly and professionally.
