Step 2: Build an email list

Next, you need to make sure to build a list to send emails to. After all, you don’t want to be emailing only yourself. There are a lot of potential strategies to build an email list, and you’ll probably want to be doing more than one of them and do them often.

Here are some of the most common ways we see businesses/individuals build email lists:

  • Let people signup on your website. ie – in the footer of your website
  • Trade people for their emails. ie – 15% off your first purchase for your email address
  • Run a digital campaign with the goal of getting emails. ie – a Facebook ads campaign
  • Ask for emails at a tradeshow or some event you sponsor or have a booth at.
  • Ask people to opt into your email list when they fill out a contact form on your website.

Again, there are so many different ways to build an email list, and we see businesses getting creative all of the time.

Tip: Do not buy email lists. There is no benefit to this, and this will end up hurting you in the long run and is technically illegal. Many email platforms will suspend your account if they think you have bought the list or if they don’t think your subscribers and opted in.

Step 3: Find a way to give value to your subscribers

After you start getting subscribers, start thinking of ways to give value to them! It’s not as simple as just building that email list. You need to give them value in order to keep them.

By creating divided lists within your subscribers, you can sort by things such as the types of products they are interested in, the likelihood that they’re ready to make a purchase, or the location they reside.

By knowing which types of products they’re interested in, you can send very customized emails to them.

Another piece of information you can use is something as simple as a name. If you know the first name of your subscribers you can call them by name, and who doesn’t love being called by their name?

Another easy example of this is sending birthday emails with a special discount on their special day!

Unlike a Facebook post which can be deleted, you can’t go into a subscriber’s inbox and delete an email.
